Understanding the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) and Its Importance

The Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, was introduced to better measure a soldier’s readiness for real-world physical demands. Unlike older tests that focused mostly on endurance, the ACFT evaluates multiple aspects of fitness strength, power, agility, and stamina through six challenging events.

Each event reflects a unique element of combat readiness. Soldiers perform the deadlift to demonstrate lower-body power, the standing power throw to test explosive strength, and hand-release push-ups to measure upper-body endurance. The sprint-drag-carry event challenges agility and coordination, while the leg tuck or plank assesses core stability. Finally, the two-mile run evaluates overall cardiovascular endurance.

What makes the ACFT different is its balance it doesn’t just test fitness; it develops it. By tracking event scores consistently, soldiers can identify weak areas and focus their training more effectively. Tools like an ACFT calculator make this process easier, giving instant score results based on gender and age standards.

The ACFT represents a major step toward modernizing Army fitness assessment. It pushes individuals to train smarter, not just harder aligning physical performance with the actual demands of military readiness.
